Are Scientists and Movie directors alike?
Are movie directors and scientists alike? How eccentric the thought was when it struck my mind. How can two completely different professions seem alike? Well when there is something in common between sumo wrestlers in Japan and cheating school teachers in US(refer Freakonomics) why can’t directors and scientists have things in common?
Wikipedia defines film director as a person who controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. So Vision is one of the traits director has to possess for his movie to get the shape what he initially thought of while deciding the script.
Scientist on the other hand makes all his earnest attempts to acquire knowledge which others in the world haven’t acquired so far. He must also have a vision for achieving his thoughts and obviously his technical skills.
As Einstein once told whenever he thinks of a problem, he wears a God’s hat to think why God has done what he has done in a particular scenario, a director also visualizes a scene and creates world around it for the scene to occur in first place. For instance director when thinking about a romantic scene like the protagonist proposing to his girl, might think all possible ways of proposing her like handing a rose, kneeling down and proposing, handling a gift and proposing, etc similarly scientist has to brainstorm the various perspectives of a particular scientific phenomenon to work. When it comes to recognition scientists are no different from directors. While one strives for the Nobel other battles for the Oscar. Some might argue prizes are no means for an academician to be recognized, but I think otherwise. Can you believe Stephen Hawking didn’t get Nobel yet! While he has hinted for his intent of getting one despite his disability in Seattle Science Festival.
On the other side of the coin scientists can’t have a thinking barrier, they can think (like the Newton’s invention of calculus for supporting his theory of gravity) as much as they wants as dreams and thoughts come for free. Whereas budget of the film, technical aspects, hero/heroine image are barriers of a directors' work. Scientists can be used as characters in a sci-fi movie by a director but directors can’t be driven as nucleus in scientist’s atomic model.
Though there are equal number of similarities and dissimilarities the creative aspect of directors and scientists to turn vision to a reality makes them alike.
